Los Cabos Weather and Your Yacht Rental

Understanding the meteorological and marine conditions in Cabo San Lucas is crucial for a safe and comfortable yachting experience.

Live Wind and Swell Radar

Unlike other land-based tourist activities, when it comes to boating, the most critical factor isn't whether it's sunny, but rather the wind speed and wave height. Use this interactive map to observe real-time winds (in knots) around the Baja California Sur peninsula:

How Does Weather Affect Routes and Activities?

Weather in the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez dictates which activities are viable and safe:

  • The Captain makes the final call: The ultimate priority is the safety of the passengers and the vessel. If the Captain determines that crossing into the Pacific or anchoring for snorkeling poses a risk, their decision is final.
  • Port Restrictions: The Port Captaincy (Capitanía de Puerto) may restrict vessel departures due to heavy swell (red/black flags).
  • Snorkel Zones: Areas like Chileno Bay or Santa Maria can be closed if currents are too strong, even on a perfectly clear and sunny day.
  • Overcast Days or Light Rain: Nautical activities can proceed normally if the sea is calm; rain alone is not always a reason for cancellation unless authorities limit navigation.

Hurricane and Rainy Season

The official Pacific hurricane season runs from June to the end of November, with September historically being the most active month for cyclonic activity in Los Cabos.

During hurricane alerts or severe tropical storms, port authorities will close the marina. Should this happen on the date of your reservation, our rain check policy allows for penalty-free rescheduling or the issuance of a credit, depending on the yacht's availability and specific rental agreement.

Wind Patterns (Coromuel and the Pacific)

At certain times of the year, particularly during the spring transition, strong afternoon winds can occur on the Pacific side. For this reason, in-water activities like snorkeling are highly recommended for morning trips or routes deeper into the Sea of Cortez.
