How Much to Tip the Yacht Crew in Cabo
Tipping in the yachting industry is customary and represents a significant portion of the crew's income. However, gratuity is always at your discretion and should reflect the quality of service you received.
The Standard Range: 10% to 20%
In Cabo San Lucas, the industry standard for a private day charter is between 10% and 20% of the base charter fee.
- 10% - 15%: Standard, solid service where the crew met expectations.
- 15% - 20%: Excellent, proactive service. The crew went above and beyond, anticipated your needs, and made the trip memorable.
Who Gets the Tip?
Tips are almost always pooled and divided equally among the captain and the crew members (deckhands, stewardesses, chefs). The team works together behind the scenes to clean the boat before you arrive and after you leave, so pooling ensures everyone is rewarded fairly.
How to Give the Tip
The most customary and preferred way is to hand the total amount in cash to the Captain at the end of the charter. You can give it in a discrete envelope or just hand it over directly while thanking them for the trip.
- Currency: USD (U.S. Dollars) and MXN (Mexican Pesos) are equally welcomed. If using pesos, calculate the exchange rate roughly so it aligns with the percentage intended.
- Card payments: Some operators allow you to add gratuity to the credit card used for the final balance, but cash is heavily preferred because it goes directly to the crew without processing delays.
Is Gratuity Ever Included?
Check your specific booking agreement. Sometimes, for large corporate groups or all-inclusive VIP packages, a standard gratuity (e.g., 15%) is pre-billed. If that's the case, you do not need to tip extra unless you felt the service was spectacular.
