Bisbee's East Cape Offshore: Tune Up from Cabo
Short answer: the East Cape Offshore fishes out of Buena Vista, about two hours by road from Cabo San Lucas, and most teams compete on boats based up there. Where we add value is before: practice days and charters from Cabo to tune team and tackle in midsummer, when the Sea of Cortez billfish bite is at its best.
The tournament runs every summer in late July out of Buena Vista, East Cape.
The summer Bisbee's, on the Sea of Cortez
The East Cape Offshore is the third leg of the Bisbee's circuit and the only one fished outside Cabo San Lucas: it is hosted at the Buena Vista Beach Resort on the East Cape in late July. The vibe is more laid-back than October — beach, pangas, families — but don't be fooled: the latest edition drew 80 teams and a record purse north of $1.5 million, and produced the story of the summer — a 773-pound black marlin one team fought for hours. Summer billfish on the Sea of Cortez are as serious as it gets.
Straight talk: can I fish it on a Cabo boat?
To compete, the practical play is a boat based on the East Cape: the fishing grounds and weigh-ins are up there and a daily run by sea makes no sense. Our fleet operates from the Cabo San Lucas marina, so our honest contribution is different: practice and preparation. July is prime blue and striped marlin on Cabo's banks too, and one or two practice days here get your team sharp before heading up.
If the tournament is far, the summer isn't
If summer fishing without an entry fee is your thing, July and August in Cabo offer exactly what makes the East Cape great: blues, stripes, dorado and tuna in warm water. See our sport fishing in Cabo San Lucas and the species-by-season guide.
